About Us
George Fox University is a private university of the humanities, sciences and professional studies offering ESL, undergraduate, graduate, seminary, and degree-completion programs. As a Christian university we offer students the distinct opportunity to explore academics from the foundation of faith. Our student population is over 1,700 undergraduates and more than 3,300 overall.
Mission
Our mission is to become one of the most innovative and engaging universities in the western United States known for academic excellence and for connecting the message of Jesus Christ to the global challenges and opportunities of the future.
Location (about the region)
The George Fox residential undergraduate campus is in Newberg, Oregon in the Willamette Valley, on an 85-acre tree-shaded campus in a residential neighborhood. The campus is in the heart of a friendly community close (23 miles) to the major metropolitan city of Portland, located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Mountain recreation is nearby and the rugged coastal beaches are just an hour away. George Fox also serves students at a number of other locations in the Pacific Northwest, including its Portland (Ore.)Center, Salem (Ore.) Center and Boise (Idaho) Center.
Session Length and Program Hours
The traditional undergraduate program, including our English Language Institute (ELI), operates on a two-semester-per-year system usually beginning in late August and ending in early May. Graduate programs begin at different times, please see our website for details.
Levels
Our English Language Institute offers three levels of instruction in English as a second language. Placement tests will determine which level is right for each student. Most students complete each level in one semester. At the advanced level students may enroll in regular, for-credit academic courses such as history or sociology, under ELI instructor supervision.
Class Size
The average class size is 20 students. Our student to professor ratio is 11:1. Our professors teach all classes: neither graduate students nor professor assistants teach in place of our professors.
Faculty Qualifications
Our faculty bring something unique to every classroom. You may have the opportunity to learn from a professor who has served in the U.S. Senate or earned a Ph.D. from Harvard, has worked for world peace with the United Nations, or has had books published. They not only excel in their fields, but are committed to the purpose and person of Jesus Christ. They will be more than just your teachers. They will be your role models, your mentors, your friends.
Credit Courses
We offer more than 40 majors, minors and pre-professional programs. The most popular programs are business, nursing, elementary education, engineering, biology, psychology, art, cinema and media communication. See http://www.georgefox.edu/academics for details.
Housing
Approximately 67% of our undergraduate students live on campus. We offer a variety of living environments: residence halls, two-room suites, apartments and even shared houses.
Special Offerings
Scholarships for international students range from $4,000 to $15,000 each year and are awarded to every qualified student. Scholarships amounts are based on grades and test scores (TOEFL or IELTS) and are indicated at the time of admission.
