About Us
Welcome to Portland State University, a nationally acclaimed leader in community-based learning. PSU is located along the tree-lined South Park Blocks of downtown Portland. The university's position in the heart of Oregon's economic and cultural center enables PSU students and faculty to apply scholarly theory to the real-world problems of business and community organizations. Location (about the region)
Portland State University is located in the heart of downtown Portland, a cosmopolitan city of 1.5 million people. Portland is famous for its close proximity to nature, rivers, mountains, ocean, and many other scenic places. The PSU campus is a 20-minute drive from Portland International Airport. Portland's safe, walkable, friendly downtown and thriving arts district are just footsteps away from the university campus. And, there is no sales tax in Oregon!
Session Length and Program Hours
Academic programs run on a quarter-system comprised of three 11 week terms; Fall, Winter, and Spring. Summer Session offerings are generally 8 weeks, but can be different formats. A full-time undergraduate student load is 14-18 credits, 9-16 credits for graduate students. International students must be enrolled full-time to maintain their F1 visa status.

The university offers conditional admission to international students who may have lower than admissible English skills. For students who want to improve their language skills for academic or social purposes, PSU's Intensive English Language Program (IELP) offers a full-time, intensive academic program with five levels of classes: E- Entry, 2- Lower Intermediate, 3- Intermediate, 4- Upper Intermediate, and 5- Advanced. At each level, students take classes in grammar, reading, writing, speaking/listening and an elective class. TOEFL preparation is available at the advanced levels.
Class Size
PSU's Faculty to Student ratio is 22 to 1. PSU's (IELP) Faculty to Student ratio is 15 to 1.
Faculty Qualifications
PSU faculty members are engaged in teaching, research, and related academic work. They come from colleges and universities throughout the United State and from foreign countries. The faculty includes over 600 full-time and several hundred part-time members. More than eighty-one percent of PSU's full-time faculty have doctoral degrees. Many of the part-time members from the community lecture in specialized courses actively involved in their professions. One hundred percent of PSU's IELP faculty hold master's degrees in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Special Offerings
In addition to a complete English Language Program, the IELP offers academic and personal counseling, and a full range of student activities including a weekly free coffee hour, access to a free IELP computer learning labs, free conversation partners and language tutors, and free trips or parties for IELP students every term. Short term and customized programs for international groups are also available through PSU's International Special Programs (ISP). The ISP Office works closely with overseas partnering universities, institutions, agencies and government offices, and can provide linkage with PSU academic departments and faculty. Admissions
International Admission to Portland State University (IELP, Undergraduate, and Graduate Programs) fall into two categories:
  • The Intensive English Language Program (IELP) application is for students who do not have a TOEFL score or who have a TOEFL score of less than 525. Admission requirements, application details and deadlines can be found at http://www.ielp.pdx.edu.
