About Us
The University of Portland is a superb place to study and learn. The five colleges of the campus, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Pamplin School of Business Administration, and the Schools of Education, Engineering, and Nursing offer an education that stresses broad liberal arts learning, the development of personal skills, and the opening of the mind, heart, and the soul. Ranked by US News & World Report magazine as one of the ten best regional universities in the West, the University offers some 1,300 courses, 41 undergraduate programs of study, and 11 graduate degrees. Mission
University of Portland is an independently governed Catholic university and a community of scholars composed of people of diverse races, ages, nationalities, and religions. Devoted since its inception in 1901 to a mission with three central tenets, teaching, faith, and service, the University provides recognized leadership and leaders to the community and to the world through the quality and innovation of its programs and the preparation and contributions of its graduates. Location (about the region)
The University's 31 brick buildings are nestled on a bluff among beautifully landscaped gardens and tall trees. The University is a vital part of its immediate neighborhood, considered one of Portland's safest areas, and is easily accessible to Portland's excellent public transportation system. Stunning views of downtown Portland, its nearby parks, and Mt. Hood, Oregon's highest mountain, can be enjoyed from campus. Students enjoy the secluded beauty of the neighborhood, and at the same time are only ten minutes from a lively, vibrant downtown in one of the great urban centers of the Pacific Northwest. Student's can shop at Saturday Market for hand-crafted treasures, watch Portland's professional basketball team, the Trailblazers, compete at the Rose Garden Arena, relax at a cafe on NW 23rd Avenue, experience local artist's work at the many galleries in the Pearl District, listen to a top class symphony at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, view a play in the Performing Arts Center, or dance the night way at trendy clubs. The City of Portland also has 160 parks, including Washington Park which houses a zoo and a rose garden and Forest Park with hundreds of trails for hiking and biking. Session Length and Program Hours
A typical academic program is 16 weeks in the Fall and 16 weeks in the Spring. The average course load is 15 credit hours for undergraduates and 9 credit hours for graduate students. There are also two summer sessions which start in mid-May and run until early August.
Levels
University of Portland has two levels: undergraduate and graduate. For undergraduate there are five schools with 35 majors and 6 pre-professional programs. We also offer 11 master's programs including business administration, communication studies, drama, education, engineering, music, nursing, and theology.
Class Size
Our student to professor ratio is 13:1. Professors teach all classes.

Our professors are highly qualified: more than 95% have the highest degrees in their fields. Close student-faculty relationships assure that the atmosphere of the college encourage a broad and deep personal growth of the student. Learning is a true community effort in which students and faculty actively take part.

Housing
Undergraduate international students are encouraged to live on-campus in one of the eight residence halls for their first year at University of Portland. Living on-campus makes it easier to attend classes and campus events, and gives students a better chance to know each other. Each hall has residential staff available day and night.
Graduate students are required to live off-campus. There are several options, such as living with a host-family, renting an apartment, or sharing a house with other students. The Office of International Student Services and Residence Life can assist in your search for off-campus housing.

The College of Arts and Sciences
The curricula and programs of the College Arts and Sciences are central to the academic life of the University and to its Catholic character. They have been designed to encourage students to formulate and incorporate intellectual, ethical, social and spiritual values. At the heart of this endeavor is an educational approach that combines excellence in teaching, value-centered curriculum, and personal attention to the individual.
Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. School of Business Administration
The Pamplin School of Business was founded in 1939, and it is one of only five schools of business in Oregon accredited by the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business. The Pamplin School of Business Administration's innovative curriculum incorporates principles such as the development of student competence, leadership activities, sense of social responsibility, and global perspectives through educational excellence. By entering into the Pamplin School of Business the student will not only gain a rich education from the diversity in each class, but also receives individual attention from faculty and staff.
School of Education
Guided by the University vision of learning as a preparation for community service and leadership, the mission of the School of Education is to develop exceptional professional educators whose practices are informed by current research and who respond effectively to the personal, professional, and ethical challenges educators face in dynamic and diverse communities. The degree programs offer the opportunity for initial and continuing teacher licensure at one of four levels: early education (age 3 through grade 4); elementary (grades 3 through 7); middle (grades 5 through 10); and high school (grades ugh 12). The curriculum is based on a well-researched knowledge base including effective teaching practice, reflective teaching, and leadership of the teacher in the classroom, in the school, and in the community.
School of Engineering
The School of Engineering is committed to providing the best possible engineering education to its students, thus enabling the students to become competent practicing engineers and computer scientists. The programs also provide a base for both graduate study and lifelong learning in support of evolving career objectives. These objectives include being informed, effective, and responsible participants in the engineering profession and society. The school endeavors to develop qualities that are essential for the practice of engineering and beneficial service to the community. These qualities include knowledge of engineering principles, the ability to apply those principles to solve problems, and the development of professional, personal, and social values.
School of Nursing
The School of Nursing offers both a bachelor of science and a master of science degree in nursing as well as a certificate in two post-masters programs of study. Convinced of the intrinsic dignity of the human person, the University believes that the best interests of nurses and persons to whom they care for, can most effectively be met and maintained by a program of studies integrating the professional courses with those primarily designed to develop the humane qualities of the students.
